The Elvis Sandwich: Bacon, Banana, Peanut Butter and Honey

I’m going to come straight out with it… I’m not really a huge Elvis fan 😅, though Sami and I did dance to ‘Falling in Love with You’ for our first dance at our wedding!

But I digress, what we’re actually here to talk about is the ‘Elvis Sandwich’, also known as the ‘Velvet Elvis’ or just ‘The Elvis’.

The stories of this sandwich’s origin vary but the gist is that one night in 1976, after a show at Graceland, Elvis and some friends took an impromptu trip from Tennessee to Denver in search of a sandwich called ‘The Fools Gold Loaf’.This literal loaf of a sandwich is made by combining an entire hollowed out french loaf, 1 pound of bacon, 1 jar of jelly and a jar of peanut butter into this sort of absurd and decadent creation.

Over time, this sandwich seems to have morphed to sometimes include bananas and honey and in general, seems to be the kind of thing that is made slightly differently in most of the places you can find it (which is kind of a fun aspect of it).

This sandwich really does have it all, which is arguably too much. It’s crispy, creamy, salty and sweet all at once and feels more like dessert than a meal. That being said, even though I might not jump to order one any time soon, it was a damn delicious experience!

Cheers,

Joey
